The Gambia-USA Signed Development Objective Grant Agreement

On Tuesday, the 10th of August 2021, the Minister of Finance and Economic Affairs took part on the official signing ceremony of the Development Objective Grant Agreement between the Governments of the Republic of The Gambia and the United States of America through USAID. This grant, which is $15 Million committed over the next five years is meant to support the NDP’s strategic priority of “Restoring good governance, respect for human rights, the rule of law, and empowering citizens”, which is a fundamental pillar to strengthening The Gambia’s democratization process. This priority prioritizes the building of the institutional and human capacity within the branches of Government in The Gambia; contributing to the protection and promotion of civic and political rights through an enabled civil society that exercises its civic and political rights in a secured environment; and improving the capabilities of the judicial sector and other public service institutions.

Both parties agreed that the agreement is a testimony of the joint commitment and resolve the two countries have and to enhance Democracy, Peace and Stability while collectively delivering development to the people of The Gambia.

In delivering his statement, the Honourable Minister conveyed the sincere appreciation of His Excellency President Adama Barrow, the Government and People of The Gambia to His Excellency President Joseph R. Biden, the Government and People of the United States of America. “We are very grateful for this laudable intervention at this critical stage of our democratization process and please be assured that we will continue to nurture these engagements”, he added.

On behalf of the government of the Gambia, Honourable Njie reaffirmed his commitment to the smooth implementation of this agreement. He assured the development partner that the Ministry of Finance and Economic Affairs will give all the support necessary for the successful implementation of this agreement.

He called on all relevant institutions and sectors in The Gambia to support this endeavor while seeking their collaboration for the attainment of the objectives of this agreement.

In his closing statement, he sincerely thanked the Government and People of the United States of America for the significant donation of Covid-19 vaccine doses to the people of The Gambia.  â€œAs The Gambia embarks on the building forward a better pathway in this COVID-19 era and as we plan to commence Recovery from the pandemic, vaccinating our populace remains a critical foundation in recovery agenda”. The Honourable Minister concluded.
